Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use the Library?
Anyone can use the Library during regular office hours.  Regular office hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm.  Outside regular opening hours and when the Librarian is away, the Library is accessible to anyone who has a Hospital badge.

Are there computers available for use?
There are three computers available in the Library.

Is the Library open to patients and members the general public?
Patients and members of the general public may use the Library only when the Librarian is staffing the Library.

Who can borrow books from the Library?
Staff, physicians, and students registered at Women’s College Hospital are permitted to borrow books.  Students must provide the name and email contact of their WCH supervisor.

How do I sign out a book?
Circulation is self-serve.  Fill out the card in the back of the book with your name and email address, then your department or your position/status.  (Students must provide the name and email contact of their WCH supervisor).  If there is no card in the back of the book, take a blank one from the Circulation System box on the Circulation shelf.  Write the name of the book on the book card.  Give the card to the Librarian or leave it on her desk. 

How do I sign out a journal?
Fill out Journal Loan Slip found in the Circulation System box on the Circulation shelf.  Give the form to the Librarian or leave it on her desk.

How long is the borrowing period?
Books can be loaned for up to one month. Any journal, excluding current journals can be loaned for up to one month.  Current journals cannot be loaned out except with the permission of the Librarian.  2 renewals are permitted.

How can I get an article or book that is not in the Library collection?
If you need an article, you can fill out the Article Request Form on the Virtual Library and click on the Submit button.
If you need a book, please fill out a Book Request Form on the Virtual Library and click on the Submit button.

Can I bring food and drink into the Library?
Food and drink are permitted in the Library.  Please do not eat or drink when using the computers.

What software is available on the computers in the Library?
The computers come with the standard Word software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).  It is not possible to save to the computer desktop; save work to encrypted Kingston USB sticks only.

Is there a printer in the Library?
There is a photocopier in the north east corner of the Library which is set up as a printer for the public computers as well as being a standard photocopier.  The photocopier is set to print double-sided in order to save paper.  If you need you need a single-sided print out, please use the print settings in the Computer.

How much does it cost to print or photocopy?
Staff and students registered at Women's College Hospital can print up to 10 pages of work or school-related material for free.  After 10 pages, there is a charge of 10 cents a page.  All personal photocopying or printing is subject to a charge of 10 cents a page. Charges are paid to the Librarian.

Can I get help with a literature search?
The Librarian will assist staff and researchers with basic literature searches if they can be done in less than 8 hours.  The turn-around time for such searches is two weeks. 
The Librarian will assist students with the use of the databases and some search strategy basics. An appointment is required.
The Librarian does not do complex searches or systematic reviews.
