Library Orientation Guide: Services and Resources We Offer

  • How do I search for books in the library?
    • We have a library catalogue that you can search to find out if we have a book in our collection.  The catalogue will also tell you which Osler site the book is at and if it is on the shelf or on loan.  Please contact the Osler library if you have any questions.
  • Can I borrow a book from the library?
    • Yes, staff can borrow books for 3 weeks.  If the book you want to borrow is available at one of our other locations, library staff will ship the book to your site library.
  • How can I renew a book?
    • Books can be renewed for an additional 3 weeks if they are not on hold.  Please contact Osler library staff to renew.  Online renewing is not available.
  • How do I sign out a book?
    • Every library book has a book card in the back.  Please print the date, your name and mnemonic on the card. Please leave this card at the library's circulation station and take a yellow date due card to remind you when the book is to be returned.
  • Can I request articles?
    • Yes, you can request articles via email, phone or in person but please use our article request form.  If we do not have the article in our collection, we will order the article and email it to you.  There is no charge for this service
  • Can I request assistance with my research?
    • Yes, please use our literature request form.  Patient care requests are completed within 24 hours.  All other searches are completed within 5 days.  There is no charge for this service. In addition, we provide virtual tips and tricks sessions on searching PubMed, Cinahl, Google Scholar, and Google.  Our schedule and registration is available here.
  • Can I request assistance with my postgraduate studies?
    • Yes, we're happy to assist you with your post graduate studies; please contact your site library.
  • How do I access electronic journals?
    • Our electronic journals can be accessed via the “Journal & e-Book A-Z” link on this page.  If you are unable to find or download an article, please contact your site Library or use the article request form.
  • Can I access Library resources off-site?
    • Yes, all of our resources can be accessed off-site through our library portal.  When the portal is launched, you'll need to sign in with your Osler mnemonic and password.  As an alternative, some resources require a username/password that can be obtained from Library staff.  Some resources allow you to create your own username/password but the registration process must be started on an Osler computer.  Please see below for our document "Accessing Library Resources Off-Site" or view the "Videos - off-site access" tab on this guide.  If you need any assistance, please contact the Library team.
