Multilingual Resources: Interpreter Services

Patient and family health information for non-English speaking clients

Interpreter Services

For many patients and their families, English is not their first language. We want every patient to be confident that they understand the information their health-care team is giving them.

If you are more comfortable speaking another language while you are here to communicate with your health-care providers, we will arrange for an interpreter at no cost to you.

Using an interpreter will not affect your right to privacy and confidentiality, nor your right to make decisions about your own care based on the best possible information we can provide.

We currently have interpreters for more than 45 languages, with Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese being the most common.

Interpreters provide far more than just language translation - they comfort anxious patients and families and provide support to people isolated by language barriers. They can also:

  • help a mother learn CPR for her infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit;
  • aid with Genetic Counselling;
  • gain invaluable information during an Emergency visit;
  • tour expectant mothers through the Labour and Delivery area; and
  • relay information to families.
