A Look Inside the Blackbox: How Unity Health Toronto is Using Technology to Improve Educational and Healthcare Quality

Brief Description: 

To inform hospital and community members, broadly speaking, about the unique qualities of the BlackBox system, the team supporting it, and the types of education scholarship it can enable.

Ryan Brydges (He/Him) - Host

Dr. Brydges trained as a Kinesiologist at the University of Waterloo. He went on to obtain his MSc and PhD from the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto. He completed an NSERC Post Doctoral Fellowship with Dr. Glenn Regehr at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Brydges now conducts research on how we learn to learn, and in particular how we can integrate the learning systems of technology-enabled and workplace learning. He’s now a Scientist and Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine and IHPME, UofT, holds a Professorship in Technology-Enabled Education at Unity Health Toronto, and is the Director of Research at the Unity Health Toronto Simulation Program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Teodor Grantcharov (He/Him) - Guest

Dr. Teodor Grantcharov is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He is the Founding Director of The International Centre of Surgical Safety – a multidisciplinary group of visionary scientists with expertise in design, human factors, computer- and data science, and healthcare research. Dr. Grantcharov previously held the Canada Research Chair in Simulation and Surgical Safety and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II diamond jubilee medal for his contributions to clinical research and patient safety in Canada. Dr. Grantcharov was awarded the honorary Fellowship of the Imperial College in London, the honorary membership of the Danish and Bulgarian surgical societies and multiple national and international awards for his contributions to patient safety. He is the Founder and CEO of Surgical Safety Technologies, a healthcare technology company that developed and commercialized the OR Black Box platform. The vison of SST is to transform the safety culture in medicine and introduce modern safety management systems in the high-risk operating room environment. Dr. Grantcharov has more than 200 high-impact, peer-reviewed publications and more than 180 invited presentations in Europe, South- and North America. He sits on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and on numerous committees with surgical professional societies in North America and Europe. He sits on the Editorial Boards of the British Journal of Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy.
