Websites for Multidisciplinary Images

Some of these sites have images provided under a Creative Commons License, allowing various levels of free use of the content. Other sites fall under the Copyright Act. The Fair Dealing provision in the Copyright Act permits the use, in education, of an entire artistic work from a publicly available website (including a photograph, diagram, drawing, and chart), unless there is a clear notice prohibiting educational use. Health Education Assets Library (HEAL)
This site contains "a digital library of freely accessible, web-based multimedia teaching materials" on health topics. Over 22,000 resources include MedlinePlus Interactive Health Tutorials, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Illustrations, NeuroLogic Exam: An Anatomical Approach, and the University of Utah's "HyperHeart" animation. The health sciences files are searchable by subject or collection.
Public Health Image Library (PHIL)
Photographs, illustrations and multimedia files from the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Government. Copyright restrictions are listed under each images. Most images in the collection are in the public domain.
University of Utah Knowledge Weavers Project
A collection of Animations, Interactive Cases, Image Banks and Collections, Tutorials, and Tools and Templates. Note in particular the Animated Heart.
Whole Brain Atlas
This is a very well reviewed information resource for central nervous system imaging which integrates clinical information with magnetic resonance (MR), x-ray computed tomography (CT), and nuclear medicine images. It's a catalogue of images of actual human brains, from normal, healthy specimens to those showing evidence of the progression of Alzheimer's disease, brain tumors and other brain ailments.

Requires signup for a free account. It's pretty easy to navigate and there's a simple help screen if you click on the ? at the bottom of the left hand scroll area. The "terms of use" does not allow you to copy, modify, etc., but the site can be used by anyone.
