EndNote 21: Cite While You Write

A basic guide to installing and using EndNote 21.

Why Use Cite While You Write?

Cite While You Write is an extremely useful tool that allows you to add in-text citations to a document while also creating a bibliography at the same time. Once you download EndNote, it should be installed automatically as a plug-in feature in MS Word. However, if this does not happen, this guide from Clarivate, the creators of EndNote, will help.

The process for adding Cite While You Write is different for Mac users; please see this guide, also from Clarivate, on how to install it on a Mac.

Importing References when in MS Word

Cite While You Write offers you two ways to add your references to your research project. One way is to import them directly from MS Word.

Step 1:

Firstly, make sure that the EndNote citation plug-in is available in your MS Word. Position your cursor where you would like the citation to appear in your work.

Step 2:

From there, select the 'insert citation' button to the left of the EndNote ribbon.

Step 3:

After this, you will be prompted to select the specific resource that you want to cite. Select the resource you want, as shown below with the blue highlighted line and purple circle.

Step 4:

Once you have it highlighted, click insert at the bottom of the menu, and it will be placed where you directed it in your research project as a footnote and as a line in your bibliography, as shown in the two images below.

Step 5:

You can also change the formatting style as required. Return to the EndNote plug-in menu at the top, and select style, as highlighted in the image below. You can then choose from a variety of reference styles.

Step 6:

Once you choose a new style, the change will be reflected in both the in-text citation and the bibliography at the end. This can be seen below with the change being made to Vancouver style citation.

Importing References Directly from EndNote

Another way to import references for your research project is to do it directly from EndNote itself.

Step 1:

Firstly, make sure that the EndNote citation plug-in is available in your MS Word. Position your cursor where you would like the citation to appear in your work.

Step 2:

Select 'Go to EndNote' as indicated in the image below.

Step 3:

EndNote will then open up. You can select one, or as many references as you want at this point.

Step 4:

Once you have selected what you would like to add to your research project, choose the insert citation button, highlighted in the image below.

Step 5:

This will then add the references that you have chosen to your project.

Step 6:

As before, you can edit the style of citation to fit your needs as well. EndNote will change it in both the bibliography and the in-text citation. For example, in the image below, we can see that the style of citation has been changed to APA.
