What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan services let you borrow materials (i.e. journal articles, books, DVDs) from other libraries when those materials are not in the collection of the St. Michael's Hospital Health Sciences Library. Materials can be requested by you, and the Health Sciences Library will locate where the materials can be borrowed and have them delivered to you by email or for pick-up at the Library.

How do I submit an Interlibrary Loan request?

Before placing a request, please check to make sure the item is not already held in our Library -- we cannot request materials from another library if they are in our collection. You can search our Journals, Articles, or Books to ensure the item is not in our collection.

Couldn't find it? Use the online ILL Request Form

How much does it cost, and how can I pay?

Cost:

  • $5.00 to $15.00, depending on the lending library's policies. The vast majority of books and articles cost $5.00.
  • Urgent article requests (24-hour turnaround time) are subject to a $10 surcharge. Please note: books are not eligible for 24-hour turnaround time.

Payment:

You can pay by cash in the Library, supply a cost center number, or use block payment (a departmental agreement with the library; please contact us to determine if your program/department has agreed to this method of payment).
